Youth unemployment is only going to get worse, the Federal Government admitted today as it again warned young jobseekers not to be too picky when looking for work.
With the youth unemployment rate now 12.3 percent -- almost double the 5.8 percent national jobless figure -- Employment Participation Minister Mark Arbib has warned people if they remain too choosy they face a life on the dole queue.
"A lot of these young people haven't seen a tight labour market before," Arbib said.
"This is for all job seekers, not just young people: really, you've got to be as flexible as possible and adapt to a new labour market."
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull have also urged Gen Y not to be job snobs and take whatever they can get.
Rudd warned Gen Y the employment outlook was grim and said they must align job expectations with tough times.
A new report today also claims the nation is heading for another massive skilled employees such as engineers, accountants and IT workers is beginning to tighten.
